GLA Super

PHYSIOLOGY: Just as the body cannot make its own vitamins, there are also Essential Fatty Acids (EFA's) that must be obtained through the diet or through supplementation. These EFA's have two major functions: 1. Structure: The EFA's are an important component of every tissue of the body, especially the brain and nervous system. If the body does not receive adequate amounts of these EFA’s, many organ systems are unable to function properly. 2. Function: EFA's are precursors to Prostaglandins (PG's). Recent research has proven that due to food processing and the changing American diet, we are no longer getting an adequate amount of these EFA's. As a result, this has thrown off the proper synthesis of PG's and may be the primary cause in the surge of many degenerative diseases. Even if we consume the "perfect" diet balanced in all essential nutrients, there are several factors which could interfere with proper PG synthesis. The most important and beneficial EFA is GLA (Gamma Linolenic Acid). GLA is manufactured from Linolenic Acid, but there are several factors which interfere with this conversion. If a patient has high levels of any of the following, they may have an extremely low level of GLA: 1. Cholesterol,2. Alcohol,3. Saturated Fats (i.e. red meats), and/or4. Diabetes.
